Creating a Web3 Carbon Credit Marketplace

Author: Dan Brody, CTO, XGC Software Inc.

The carbon credit ecosystem is undergoing a transformation. As the need for climate accountability increases, the market is calling for better transparency, efficiency, and trust. At XGC Software Inc., we’re engineering that future, leveraging blockchain, oracles, and enterprise-grade open source tools to build the next-generation Web3 Carbon Credit Marketplace.

Why the Carbon Credit Market Needs Rebuilding

Today’s carbon credit systems are fragmented. Manual verification, opaque ledgers, and regulatory inconsistency result in inefficiencies that deter global participation. At XGC, we see carbon credits not as paper certificates but as programmable, traceable digital assets — climate-backed tokens that can be issued, traded, and retired transparently across borders and institutions.

As CTO, I’ve worked with our team to reimagine this ecosystem from the ground up. We believe that by combining trusted blockchain infrastructure with a practical enterprise interface, we can scale access to real, measurable carbon offsetting – while automating trust at every layer.

Hybrid Architecture: Frappe Meets Web3

Our solution blends Web2 and Web3 for maximum usability and trust. At the core of our application is the Frappe Framework, a powerful Python-based full-stack platform that allows us to build modular, metadata-driven applications rapidly. It’s the same stack that powers ERPNext — and in our case, drives the carbon project lifecycle from KYC to verification to issuance.

  • Frontend and ERP logic: Frappe + Redis + PostgreSQL for robust, role-based workflows and reporting
  • Blockchain tokenization: Cardano smart contracts (Plutus) for public carbon credit trading
  • Private data transactions: Midnight Chain smart contracts (Rust) for KYC-protected deal flow and emissions documentation
  • Cloud infrastructure: Hosted securely on AWS, integrated with IPFS for decentralized proof storage

This hybrid approach allows us to deliver enterprise-grade dashboards while anchoring critical trust data on-chain. Smart contracts handle issuance and redemption, oracles provide real-time validation, and our users — from NGOs to institutions — interact through familiar, frictionless web experiences.

Tokenizing Carbon: The Role of Smart Contracts

Tokenizing carbon credits isn’t just about minting a coin — it’s about transforming trust. Each project is submitted, verified, and validated through workflows governed by both off-chain processes and smart contract automation. Our contracts fall into two tiers:

  • Public Smart Contracts (Plutus on Cardano): Mint, trade, and retire carbon tokens (CarbonCoins) transparently
  • Private Smart Contracts (Rust on Midnight): Enable confidential transactions while preserving auditable integrity for enterprise and government clients

For instance, when a reforestation project completes verification, our platform mints CarbonCoin tokens that represent verifiable COâ‚‚ removals. Users can purchase and retire them to offset emissions, with every step stored immutably on-chain.

Data Integrity with Oracles: Chainlink + Supra

Web3 marketplaces are only as strong as the data they ingest. That’s why we’ve partnered with leading oracle networks:

  • Chainlink: Feeds on-chain carbon pricing and market rates into smart contracts to reflect real-world conditions
  • Supra: Validates emissions data, project milestones, and environmental telemetry (e.g., satellite imagery, IoT sensor feeds)

These integrations ensure our contracts are not static – they respond dynamically to verified environmental inputs, unlocking the ability to automate pricing, reward milestones, and trigger token issuance with no human intervention.

Designed for Humans, Built for Scale

We knew early on that blockchain’s complexity was a barrier to adoption. That’s why we prioritized a clean, accessible UI powered by Frappe. Features include:

  • Clean dashboard with real-time emissions, project stats, and token inventory
  • KYC onboarding integrated with wallet login (Eternal, Lace, or enterprise SSO)
  • Smart contract audit trails linked to project reports (IPFS)
  • Carbon credit redemption and retirement tools
  • Admin interfaces for validators, partners, and issuers

Whether you’re a land steward, ESG auditor, government stakeholder, or carbon buyer — our marketplace meets you where you are. And thanks to Frappe’s modularity, we can easily scale features or localize interfaces across jurisdictions.

Use Case: Decentralized Carbon Market for Governments

One of the most compelling applications of our architecture is for national carbon registries. We’ve proposed and piloted systems where ministries can tokenize credits from verified domestic projects, track them on a permissioned ledger (Midnight), and offer a public-facing redemption interface — all powered by our stack.

This architecture is not just secure — it’s self-sovereign. Each nation maintains governance over its data and compliance framework, while still participating in international markets via Cardano’s public chain. It’s interoperability without compromise.

The Vision Behind the Technology

At XGC, we’re not just solving for emissions accounting — we’re solving for trust. The carbon economy of the future must be auditable, accessible, and adaptive. Our work sits at the intersection of:

  • Transparency: Verifiable offsets tracked on-chain
  • Privacy: Institutional confidentiality via Midnight
  • Automation: Oracles + contracts replacing bureaucracy
  • Scalability: ERP-grade architecture built on Frappe

We see carbon tokens becoming programmable units of value in the climate economy — used not only to offset but to underwrite green finance, incentivize behavior, and verify outcomes.
